Our Story

Nilam Partners grew from a recognition that intellectual property work in Malaysia was often transactional — filings processed without the deeper advisory conversation that helps clients understand what protection they were actually receiving.

The practice was built around a different approach: each matter begins with a thorough assessment of what the client is trying to protect, what the commercial objective is, and what filing strategy most directly serves that objective. Filing paperwork is the outcome of that conversation, not the starting point.

Over the years, the firm has assisted product inventors filing their first patent, established manufacturers formalising trademark portfolios, and technology companies structuring IP assignments ahead of Series A funding rounds. The work spans the full spectrum of intellectual property practice, with particular depth in trademark prosecution, patent drafting, and portfolio enforcement.

The team operates from Wisma UOA Damansara II in Kuala Lumpur, within easy reach of clients across the Klang Valley. International matters — PCT filings, Madrid Protocol applications, and cross-border enforcement — are coordinated through established correspondent networks across ASEAN, Europe, and North America.

Intellectual Property Practice in Malaysia

Malaysia's intellectual property framework — administered through the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living — provides trademark, patent, industrial design, and copyright protection through a well-developed statutory system. Malaysia is a signatory to the Paris Convention, the Patent Cooperation Treaty, and the Madrid Protocol, allowing rights holders to extend protection internationally through coordinated mechanisms.

Nilam Partners works within this framework to secure and maintain IP rights for businesses operating across the manufacturing, technology, pharmaceutical, consumer goods, and creative industries. Our approach to each matter prioritises clear communication: clients receive plain-language explanations of prosecution status, examiner requirements, and strategic options at each stage of the process.

Brand protection through trademark registration under Malaysia's Trade Marks Act 2019 forms the foundation of many client engagements. For product and technology companies, patent prosecution under the Patents Act 1983 requires careful structuring of claims to achieve meaningful coverage while satisfying MyIPO examination requirements. Portfolio management engagements address the full lifecycle of IP assets — from initial registration through licensing commercialisation and, when necessary, enforcement.
